Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   Why don't I see any plot when I drop Trade Equity into a chart window?
A:  Either Trade Equity is a straight line and is not scaled to left or right, or it has an invalid plot caused by an invalid buy, sell or position-size formula.

Q:   Why do I see a straight line when I plot Trade Equity on a chart?
A:  Either there is no buy signal, or the buy (or sell-to-cover) option does not match the formula placement. Use 'N' for options 1-4 and 'Ns' for option 5.

Q:   Why does my equity curve follow the price for ever following a buy signal?
A:  The sell signal never becomes active, or the sell option is set incorrectly for the sell formula placement. Use 'X' for options 1-4 and 'Xs' for option 5.

Q:   Why is a trade sometimes missed when there is a legitimate buy signal?
A:  It may be that the sell signal is present on the same bar as the buy signal. This is only acceptable when the intended trade is intra-bar. Several conditions will inhibit such a trade - any delay being set, a buy on Close, a sell on Open etc. etc.. Check that your formulas do not generate concurrent signals. One remedy can be to add "Buy:=Buy AND Sell=0;" to the end of your buy formula.

Q:   Why doesn't the Trade Equity curve match the System Tester equity curve?
A:   There are many legitimate reasons for this. Factors you should consider include dates or bars under test, MetaStock System Tester being used, rules enforced by Trade Equity, binary or price signals, and so on. The Enhanced System Tester introduced a whole new range of factors to consider but it is possible to exactly match EST and Trade Equity results when the issues are understood and addressed.
